ORP vs. PPM: Which Pool Measurement Tells You What?

Why a Conversion Chart Is Tempting

Operators naturally want a simple answer such as “700 mV equals X ppm chlorine.” That would be convenient, but it oversimplifies the chemistry.

ORP does not directly measure chlorine, and the relationship changes with conditions such as pH and other factors, so a fixed conversion can create false confidence.

Which Measurement Should Operators Use?

Use the measurement that answers the question you are asking. If you need a free-chlorine concentration, use a method designed to measure free chlorine. If you need a continuous oxidation/control signal, ORP can be useful.
