Why does free chlorine keep dropping in a pool?

Start with the test. Then look at sunlight, pool use, circulation, the feeder, pH, and stabilizer. A low number is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Short answer

A low free-chlorine result may mean the pool is using chlorine fast. It may also point to weak feed, poor circulation, or a bad test. Check the sample and method before changing the water.

Step 1 / check the test

Check the sample and test first

Two low readings matter only if both tests are sound. Use the site’s approved sample method and the kit or meter instructions. If the result does not fit the pool’s look, recent treatment, or another test, check it before adding product.

  • Take the sample from the approved place and depth. Avoid a stagnant container, skimmer, or return stream unless the site procedure names it.
  • Check reagent expiration and storage. Clean the cell or comparator. Use the right sample size, mix well, and read at the correct time. Record the method and units.
  • If chlorine is very high, some DPD chlorine tests can bleach and show a false low. Follow the kit’s high-range or dilution steps. Do not make up a correction.
  • Repeat a surprise result with a clean sample. If the procedure allows, use a second method. Keep both readings; do not quietly replace the first.

Step 2 / trace the loss

Look for what changed

Start with the last good reading. What changed after that? Check the pool, the equipment, and the log before you guess at a fix.

MAHC reference values, not universal rules

The 2024 fifth-edition Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) gives a free-chlorine minimum of 1 part per million (ppm) without CYA and 2 ppm with CYA. These are voluntary reference values, not universal law. The local health department, authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), adopted code, site procedure, product label, and current conditions control.

What the data can—and cannot—tell you

A low reading is more useful when you record the time, sample point, pH, CYA, equipment state, and pool activity. The log may show a pattern: chlorine falls after busy days, at one site, or when a feeder is off.

Free chlorine alone cannot show the cause. It cannot tell you if the loss came from sun, demand, feed, circulation, or a bad sample. It cannot prove a pool is safe or meets local rules. Use the checks your site requires, then record the decision and follow-up.

A low number is not a dosing order

Follow the chemical label, handling procedure, and current direction from the authority having jurisdiction. MAHC is voluntary guidance, not federal law. If local rules call for closure, escalation, or another response, follow those rules.
