Choose automation for visibility, not a compliance shortcut
An automatic tester does not remove the technician. The useful question is simpler: Which tests or notes are easy to miss between visits? A scheduled test can show a change, flag a result, and give the next person a record to check.

What Amano actually measures and records
- Liquid-reagent tests for free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, and total alkalinity.
- Tests that usually run twice each day. The timing and frequency can be adjusted.
- Timestamped digital logs from the completed readings.
- An alert after a test when a result needs review.
- Built-in cellular connection.
These are product features. They do not prove that a local code accepts the device in place of a manual test. Ask the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and facility operator about test frequency, record rules, and response steps.
Questions to ask before installing an automatic tester
- What method is used? Check the liquid reagent, sample path, range, units, read time, and out-of-range steps.
- How do you check a result? Ask about reagent expiry and storage, cleaning, service, checks, and what to do when a manual test differs.
- What goes in the record? It should show the site, parameter, value, unit, test time, device status, and any exception—not just a dashboard color.
- Who responds to an alert? Name the reviewer, the check, the site SOP, and where the action is recorded.
- What if the connection or test fails? Built-in cellular and a test schedule do not ensure delivery or a valid result.
When automatic and manual results disagree
Different values do not show, by themselves, that the water changed or that one test was wrong. Check the context before diagnosing the water.
- Confirm the same body of water and parameter. Record the actual test times and how far apart they were.
- Check the method, units, reagent condition, and device state.
- Repeat the test only as the approved procedure allows.
- Keep both results with the sample details, verification step, and follow-up.
- Review recent treatment, mixing, and pool use.
What automatic data can—and cannot—tell you
Several timestamped results can show a pattern. Maybe pH rises after aeration, free chlorine falls after a busy period, or one site differs from the rest of a route. The trend can tell a technician where to look first.
The data cannot find every cause, check indoor air, replace an inspection, or show that an unmeasured value is in range. It adds one view. It is not a guarantee or a reason to skip a required check.
A clear-looking pool is one observation; it does not replace the chemical tests required for that facility.
