Why Can a High Chlorine Reading Be a Problem?

What may be behind the result or symptom?

Start with the last known-good condition and ask what changed. More than one factor may be present, and the same symptom can have different causes.

What should you check first?

  1. Restrict use when the local procedure requires it and repeat the test with the approved high-range method.
  2. Confirm sample point, units, reagent condition, timing, and any required dilution technique.
  3. Inspect feeder output, controller readings, flow interlocks, inventory changes, and manual additions.
  4. Follow the local health-department and facility procedure for correction, documentation, and reopening.

A reading is not a dosing order

Do not copy a universal dose from another vessel or product. Verify the test, actual water volume, product identity, operating target, protective equipment, and required response. Then follow the exact label and governing procedure.

What can the observation not prove?

A high reading cannot by itself identify the feed failure or declare when the water is safe to reopen. A suspiciously low reading also cannot rule out very high chlorine when the method may bleach.

Keep the original result, repeat result, method, sample point, actual time, recent treatment, visible condition, equipment state, decision, and follow-up together. A record is most useful when it preserves uncertainty instead of quietly replacing it.
